Self-care that works for youNov 15, 2021
Self-care and wellbeing look different for all people. What works for your friends or colleagues might not necessarily work for you. If self-care is not part of your daily routine, it’s worth giving yourself time to experiment with different activities and find the ones that work for you. While it’s important to decide on a routine and stick with it, there is no point in pushing yourself to do something you don’t enjoy.
Give yourself time and space to tune in to yourself and learn what works for you. Don’t judge your needs. Only you can understand what works for you, and you should only be guided by your inner wisdom, not your external environment. In fact, your self-care routine should be an opportunity to take a break from your external environment and let yourself just be, however that looks for you.
Also remember to start small. New habits don’t form overnight, and big shifts in your daily routine won’t last long. Read this article by James Clear, the author of Atomic Habits, to learn about the effect of small steps in building habits.
To get started, here is a list of activities that has worked for our members:
- Physical: exercising, taking baths, taking screen breaks, increasing your intake of healthy and nourishing food, drinking more water
- Mental: taking social media breaks, having days with no to-do list, attending therapy, participation in coaching
- Emotional: deep breathing, cooking or baking, doing something creative, spending time with inspiring/uplifting people, doing something nice for yourself like buying flowers
Think of your self-care activities as a deliberate act to move yourself away from stress or burnout towards optimal wellbeing. What is one thing you can do today that will shift your direction towards wellbeing? Keep it simple, and don’t overthink it. The sooner you start, the sooner you can learn what works for you and what doesn’t.
